A 24-hour soak, a strainer over a bowl, and a rinse a few times a day. After 2-4 days you have sprouts.

What you need

  • Whole black lentils. Green or brown work too.
  • A bowl, and a strainer that sits on top of it.

Red or split lentils won't sprout. You need whole lentils.

1. Soak for 24 hours

Cover the lentils with plenty of water, since they swell. Leave them for a day at room temperature.

2. Strainer over a bowl

Drain, rinse and set the strainer over the bowl. The lentils should stay damp, not sit in water.

3. Rinse at least twice a day

Morning and evening, rinse in the strainer, shake and set it back over the bowl. On hot days, rinse more often.

When they're ready

After 2-4 days, when the sprout is about as long as the lentil. Faster in summer.
